Symbols are one of the most important parts of Flash and creating animations that flow. A symbol has many different editable properties. When you create and use a symbol you are allowed to adjust it's "Alpha" or transparency, "Brightness", "Tint", or all of those through the "Advanced" option.

A symbol is one of the easiest ways of creating animation using the "Motion Tween" method. Once you create a symbol it is stored in your "library." Your "library" is a place that shows you all of the objects that are being used in your flash movie. To open your library go to "Window", "Library". In there you'll see all of the "Symbols" you have created. You can select a "Symbol" in your "Library" and drag it to your "Stage." Once it's on the stage you can edit it's properties. This will not affect the original "Symbol" in your "Library" only the "Symbol" that's on the stage.

You also can drag many instances of that "Symbol" on the stage and edit individual properties of each and every one of those "Symbols."

1)
Create the object you would like to turn in to a "Symbol." This can be a graphic that you have created in Flash or any other program and brought it in to Flash. If you would like to use a JPG or GIF you go to "File", "Import." Find the image you would like to bring in, then follow the next steps.
2)
Select the object and go to "Insert", "Convert to "Symbol."
3)
Once you have done that you can animate that "Symbol."
