Helpful Tips Around the House
Kitchen Tips

Written By: Katheryn

The best way to keep your kitchen safe and healthy is
to keep it clean and organized. The most important
room in your home to keep clean is the kitchen,
because it is the room where your food is stored,
cooked, and eaten. It is very easy and simple to keep
your kitchen clean, let's start with the refrigerator. You
should check your food items daily for expiration
dates, and never eat anything you are unsure about.
You should always store your new groceries in the
back of the refrigerator and the older items at closest
reach to make sure that you use them first.
Clean up spills as they occur, don't wait a few days
before cleaning them up; this applies to each and
every spill that occurs in your kitchen, not just in your
refrigerator. The longer you wait to clean a spill the
harder it's going to be to clean it up. Always remember
that you should clean as you go.
Do the dishes as you use them, don't just leave them
in the sink until your cabinets are empty and then
decide to do the dishes. It is much easier just to fill the
sink with warm soapy water in the morning and drop
the dishes in as you use them, then at the end of the
day washing them will be much easier. If you have a
dishwasher in your home then it is best to rinse them
and put them in the dishwasher right after you are
finished with them.
To keep your cabinets organized, you should have a
certain place that you keep each item, including food,
keep snack foods with other snack foods and so on.
An important thing to remember is that sponges are
actually a great way to spread germs, it is better to
use paper towels and discard them after each use.
Another disposable item that can be helpful is any
type of kitchen wipes, such as Lysol, Clorox, or etc.
because they have the disinfectant already in them.
These few helpful tips will help you to maintain a clean
and healthy kitchen!

Winterizing Your Home

Written By: Kaitlin W.

It is best to start winterizing your home in the fall, as
temperatures
drop your home will need some work. Keep furnace
filters and change them every month. You might
want to switch your thermostat to a programmable
style. Remove all flammable materials from around
your furnace 36 inches. Get the fireplace ready.
Cover the top of your chimney to keep out mice and
birds. If the chimney hasn't been cleaned, call
someone to clean it. Buy firewood or chop it and
keep it in a dry place.

Check the exterior, doors, and windows. Use
weather-stripping around doors to keep out the cold
air from coming in, and caulk your windows, if
needed replace broken or cracked windows. If you
end up replacing the entire window paint the wood
around it. If you have a basement you might want to
protect your window with plastic shields. Switch
your summer screens with glass. If you have storm
windows put them out.

Inspect your roof, gutters, and downspouts. If the
weather temperature falls below 32 degrees you
should add insulation to your attic. Make sure water
can't enter your home. Inspect roof shingles or tiles
if you have to. Clean out your gutters and use a
hose to spray out your downspouts. You might want
to think about getting Leaf Guards on your gutters
and extensions on the downspouts.

Replace old rakes and snow shovels if needed.
Sharpen ice choppers and buy bags of ice melt or
sand. Check your foundation. Seal the foundation
cracks. Secure crawlspace entrances. Get smoke
and carbon monoxide detectors. Some cities require
smoke detectors in every room so find out if you
have to. Buy extra batteries for your smoke
detectors. Put your carbon monoxide detector close
to your furnace or water heater. Test your detectors
monthly to make sure they work. Buy a fire
extinguisher or replace an older one that is 10 years
old or more.
