Hi. I'm Max, a Lab-shepherd.
I've been around the block more than a few times and seen lots of movies with my master.

Welcome to my new and different web site recommending movies on that fantastic format, DVD.
It's different because I only review movies of quality, not the "dogs."

I drink out of a water dish, but too many movies today are like drinking out of the toilet. Or they walk you down some dark alley among the trash cans with a serial killer who is supposed to be the hero.

I prefer strolling the sidewalk with a responsible, mature master.
Not always just on the sunny side, but never in the gutter.
My rating system is one paw up for very good movies and two paws up for really good movies.
I don't recommend movies that rate less than two paws up.
If a movie is really terrific, I give it two paws up, a tail wag, and my highest praise: "Woo woo woo!"

Okay, I'm not going to chew on this bone any longer.
What's new on DVD this month that's worth renting or buying?

Picks of the Month

We’ve eaten the last of the Thanksgiving turkey at our house and have started to think about decorating for Christmas. And what DVDs to give to family and friends. There are a variety of worthy titles to consider this month, and I have chosen three best picks and give them all lots of tail wags and two paws up:

ALL MINE TO GIVE

The 1957 heart-tugger has finally arrived on DVD in time for the perfect Christmas DVD gift. It tells the true story of a Scottish family in rural America at the turn of the last century. The parents, played by Glynis Johns and Cameron Mitchell, work against odds in a hardscrabble life and then succumb to illness, leaving their six youngsters orphans on Christmas Eve. Rex Thompson, playing the oldest sibling, obeys his mother’s dying request, to find homes for them all. See the movie to see how he accomplishes this enormous task. It is a Christmas movie for the whole family, from Warner Brothers. But where’s the dog?

WALL-E

Young children may only enjoy the cute digitally-animated robots and the plentiful action, but probably not understand the deeper story behind it all. Wall-E is a silent binocular-eyed robot trash compactor who doesn’t know he’s the last of his breed to leave Earth in a post-apocalyptic future. One reviewer aptly describes him as “like R2D2 gone Charlie Chaplin in the land of The Road Warrior.” A spaceship lands and he meets EVE, a white pod alien robot, and it’s love at first mechanized heartbeat. They and a pet cockroach begin a wild journey across the galaxy to save a space-bound colony of humans who have devolved into being infantile couch potatoes hardly worth saving from themselves. Despite its satirical turns, the movie retains its heart, up to and including the ending which I won’t give away. Pixar and Disney have given us a wonderful new world of animation, a story relevant to our times and future, and a DVD worthy of being put under any Christmas tree this season.

KIT KITTREDGE

The adventures of a girl playing detective in a Depression-era 1930s small town. Lots of fun, especially for girls, and my master and I thought it was like a blend of Nancy Drew, a Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and Pollyanna. Abigail Breslin repeats her charm from Little Miss Sunshine in playing Kit, who may just be too perfect a little girl to be believable, but then some dogs are, so why not girls? A delightful family film from Picturehouse and New Line Cinema. There is a basset hound in it, but it doesn’t get to do much sniffing or sleuthing.

Stocking-stuffer DVDs this month:

CHILDREN OF THE STONES

A classic sci-fi thriller about the paranormal in a sleepy English village that was a cult favorite on British television in the late 1970s. The village is surrounded by a megalithic stone circle which is being studied by an astrophysicist and his teenage son. The villagers, meanwhile, have fallen under the hypnotic spell of a local scientist. The story takes us into a world of black holes, psychic powers, druid rituals, and a time trap from which there may be no return. Filmed on location at the Avebury stone circle, older than nearby Stonehenge, it’s chilling fun for adults and young people, from Acorn Media.

THE LAST DETECTIVE, COMPLETE COLLECTION

Peter Davison is wonderful (as usual) as Detective “Dangerous” Davies, the least likely candidate to solve any crime, but he manages to do it, astounding everyone. The contemporary mysteries are a best-selling series blending mystery and comedy in North London, based on the novels by Leslie Thomas. This complete collection includes 17 episodes in a boxed set of nine DVDs. Extras include an interview with Davison, who starred as the younger brother in All Creatures Great and Small and some of the Doctor Who series. Excellent mystery entertainment from Acorn Media.

THE LAST ENEMY

The Masterpiece Contemporary drama stars Benedict Cumberbatch (of Atonement) as a brilliant if reclusive mathematician working in China who returns home to England for the funeral of his brother, an aid worker killed by a landmine in Afghanistan. He falls in love with his brother’s widow, a foreign beauty, and becomes enmeshed in a police state conspiracy in which the government monitors everyone’s actions and movements. It’s an intriguing thriller with Robert Carlyle (of The Full Monty), from WGBH Boston Video.

ANOTHER LIFE

Based on a real criminal case that shocked Great Britain I the late 1920s, this is a gripping drama about a free-spirited young woman (Natasha Little) who finds herself in a cold, boring marriage. She loses her heart to another man with whom she corresponds (Ioan Gruffudd) about ways to get rid of her stuffy husband. The unloved husband (Nick Moran) is murdered, but by whom and will the killer be caught and convicted? Beautiful period costumes and sets enhance this love story gone wrong, from BFS Entertainment.

WOULD I LIE TO YOU? 2

The sequel and further adventures of Eddie, a non-Jew trying to pass as Jewish although totally ignorant of Jewish traditions, in a hugely popular French comedy. Richard Anconina stars as a successful businessman in the Paris garment district. He and his associate attempt to counter an economic downturn by trying to get a large chain of department stores to take on their new line of clothing. Add a dose of romantics, antics, and gags and you have a delightful comedy in French with English subtitles from Koch Entertainment.

GABRIEL & ME

Jimmy, 11, wants to be an angel, with wings so he can fly, like his friend Gabriel, a high-ranking archangel who answers prayers. The boy wants Gabriel’s help in saving the life of his father, diagnosed with lung cancer. Gabriel tries to teach the boy the nuances of what it means to become an angel, while the father’s time is running out. David Bradley plays the boy, Iain Glen the father, and Billy Connolly the archangel. “A cockles-of-your-heart-warming drama” said one reviewer. Clever and rewarding, from BFS Entertainment.

TOGETHER AGAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME

A charming holiday story in which a couple bring their children together for the first time since their marriage seven years before. The family reunion at Christmas isn’t quite what the parents hoped for, but all ends well. It’s a little different twist on Christmas that leaves you with a good feeling, from Ocean Park and PorchLight Entertainment.

STEP BROTHERS

My master said this movie reminded him of a creative director at an advertising agency he once worked at. The man said “If I ever grow up, I’ll be out of a job.” Will Farrell, co-star as one of the step-brothers, is in the same dilemma in real life. He knows his audience: six-year-olds or twenty- and thirty-somethings of the same level of maturity. He and John C. Reilly play two spoiled middle-aged loafers forced to live together when their single parents get married to new mates, then proceed to destroy the marriage. If dumb makes you laugh, and watching two grown men fight over the television remote makes you laugh and not cringe through 98 minutes of foul language and other juvenile annoyances, you may be entertained by this “hilarious” comedy from Columbia Pictures and Sony.

THE SEA CHANGE

An arrogant British businessman who is used to getting anything he wants has trouble getting a beautiful young woman he loves. Problem is, she wants him to change. Things start to go askew when a cancelled flight leaves him stranded at an airport in Spain. In an odd twist of fate, his only hope of winning back his lady love lies in another passenger stuck at the airport who tries to give lover-boy the personality makeover of a lifetime. The comedy stars Ray Winstone, Sean Chapman, and Maryam D’Abo, from BFS Entertainment.

A charming tale about toys that come to life on Christmas Eve that won the 1987 Golden Hugo Award for children’s programming. Part of the Jim Henson’s Christmas Classics line, it is a live action story with a cast of loveable puppets from Henson and delightful songs by Jeff Moss. >From Hit Entertainment and Lionsgate

Watch the DVD, then close your eyes and follow one of Susan Hepburn’s sessions in which she employs hypnotherapy to help you lose pounds and inches. My master and I haven’t tried it, but thousands have and Hepburn claims they’ve achieved weight loss the mental way. From BFS Entertainment.
