All About the RedHawks: A Minor League Blog

One fan's view of the goings on in minor league baseball

Welcome to my new and improved website. After much thought, I have decided to go with the blog format on this website. I think it will make it easier for me to provide information and links to articles etc.

This page will continue to focus on the Oklahoma Redhawks. However, I will also provide information on other current and former minor league players as well.

Goodbye Kirby!

--Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett died yesterday of complications from a stroke. I don't think it was possible to grow up in the 80's and not know Kirby and his impact on baseball. Twins minor leaguer Pat Neshek (pictured) grew up in Minnesota and has a very touching column on what Kirby meant to him.

--Rotoworld has issued its List of the Top 150 Prospects in baseball. The Rangers land 6 players on the list. They are: John Danks (#41), Edison Volquez (#49), Thomas Diamond (#61), Ian Kinsler (#72), Joaquin Arias (#142), and Josh Rupe (#146). If you are wondering, yes these lists are always completely different depending on the author and the tools/skills they deem most important.

--The Rangers have an article about Kam Loe and his performance in yesterday's B-Game.

--Kathleen O'Brien has an article an Joaquin Benoit and his struggles this spring.

--The FWST has an article about Mike Young and Mark Teixiera participating in the WBC.

--Evan Grant has an article on Juan Dominguez and how he and the Rangers always seem to be on a different page.

--The DMN has notes about Joaquin Arias and Phil Nevin. They also say that while Hank Blalock was told his sore shoulder was nothing serious, this is his 3rd game in a row off.

--In Monday's Report the DMN has a recap of yesterday's game and a hilarious Seinfield Q&A with R.A. Dickey.

--Sportshooter has a great article about MLB Photo Day.

--The Rockies Mailbag talks about the catching battle between Danny Ardoin and Yorvit Torrealba.

--Questions about several current and former RedHawks in T.R. Sullivan's Mail Bag.

Botts' Bomb was Big!

--The next focus is up, featuring RHP and local boy Andrew "Ace" Walker (pictured). Ace seems like a pretty cool kat and should be a nice addition to the RedHawks once he gets here.

--Ex-RedHawk Rico Rodriguez made his first Grapefruit league start of the year and allowed one run in two innings.

--Ex-RedHawk Ryan Ludwick went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs yesterday.

--TR Sullivan's Notes talk about Emo Ramirez and the fact he is out of options, and also has a little discussion about future RedHawk Edison Volquez.

--A couple interesting notes from today's Buzz. Apparently a bunch of players scored tickets to the Nickelback concert because their manager is a Rangers fan. Today's Q&A, about movies, is with CJ Wilson.

--Several familar names in the Box for the game between Team Italy and the Tigers. Former RedHawk Pete Zoccolillo (pictured) went 1 for 2 with a double and 2 walks and future RedHawk Vince Sinisi went wih a HR. Former Portland Beaver Dustin Delucchi went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs but also dropped the ball which resulted in the Tigers victory.

--The DMN has a Q&A with probable RedHawk Brian Anderson.

--Several former Round Rock/New Orleans players had a good opening game in Astros Camp. They include Eric Brunlett, Chris Burke and Jason Lane.

Some Love for OKC!

--TR Sullivan has a great article on R.A. Dickey (pictured). Rah gives some love to OKC, stating "Best place to play in the Minors: "You don't have to look much farther than Oklahoma City. I'm sort of the Crash Davis of Oklahoma City. You look in their record book, I'm all over it -- good and bad. If they make a movie about Oklahoma City baseball, I'm ready to help out Kevin Costner. "One of the reasons that place was special is the fans were just dynamic."

--The Rangers have another article on their website about the competition for the 5th spot in the rotation.

Let the Games Begin!

--The last intersquad game was played yesterday and had several current and future RedHawks in the lineup. Kam Loe pitched 2.1 innings and John Danks pitched 1.2 hitless frames with 3 punchouts. Personal favorite Wes Littleton (pictured) allowed a hit in .2 innings. Ron Mahay had a tough outing, not getting anyone out and giving up 3 runs on 3 hits. Ian Kinsler drew two walks in his only 2 plate appearances, and probable RedHawk Nick Trzesniak went 1 for 1 with an RBI single.

--Josh Rupe is starting today's opening intrasquad game against the Royals. Also scheduled to pitch are probable RedHawks Kevin Walker, Joselo Diaz, Jayson Durocher and Edison Volquez. Ex-RedHawk John Wasdsin is also expected to pitch. In addition, personal favorite John Hudgins and Nick Masset are being brought over from minor league camp for the game.

--The FWST speculates that if Erubiel Durazo makes the Rangers Laynce Nix may start the year with the RedHawks. Here's hoping that doesn't happen.

Kam's Ready for the World Series

--Great quote in today's FWST from Kam Loe. Last week pitching coach Mark Connored comment that Kam was pitching like its the seventh game of the World Series. Kam's response: "I want to be in the seventh game of the World Series this year," Loe said, "so if I'm pitching at that level already, I guess that's a good thing. I just want that job so bad that I came in here on a mission."

--The DMN has an article on new Rangers pitching coach Mark Connor, including some quotes from some former RedHawks.

--Evan Grant's latest Newsletter is out. Very interesting response to why Jason Botts (pictured) isn't in contention for the Rangers' DH spot. He basically says they don't want 2 rookies in the lineup and Ian Kinsler is basically guaranteed the one spot.

--The FWST has a nice Profile on potential RedHawk Johnny Washington and his life in Compton, CA.

--Today's Buzz has a Q&A with possible RedHawk Joselo Diaz.

--Great Article about my boy Pete Zoccolillo (pictured) and his representing Italy in the WBC.

--Giant Barry Bonds apparently dressed up as Paula Abdul during the Giant's rendition of American Idol.

--TR Sullivan has a nice Story on two future RedHawks, John Mayberry Jr. and Steven Murphy.

--The Rangers played their first Intersquad Game. RedHawks highlights included a HR by catcher Keith McDonald.

--Despite back and hip soreness, Ex-RedHawk Doug Davis retired all three batters he faced on nine pitches.

--Yhe Kansas City Star is reporting that Zack Greinke left the team to deal with ongoing emotional issues. Zack is a nice kid and hopefully can take care of what he needs to take care of and return to the Royals.

--Ex-RedHawk Craig Monroe has been sidelined with a sore side muscle, but his injury is not considered serious.

--Omaha Royal and all around cool guy Mike Coolbaugh suffered a broken left wrist when he was hit by a Denny Bautista fastball in an intrasquad game. He is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. Mike broke his wrist last year with Round Rock after fouling a ball off of his arm. Get well soon Mike!

--CBS Sportsline has published their Rangers Outlook giving love to several current and future RedHawks.

--The Padres website has a nice article on Adrian Gonzalez and his homecoming.

2 Days Till the First Spring Training Game!

--You know it is going to be an interesting Mailbag when the first question involves the Rangers persuit of WR Terrell Owens.

--The DMN has a nice article about Kam Loe (pictured) and his drive to succeed.

--The Rangers first intersquad scrimmage will be held today. The proposed lineups are interesting. Several RedHawks, including catcher Keith McDonald will be playing. McDonald will DH for the "big" team.

--Another funny Poll in the DMN. It asks select Rangers what their favorite childhood toy was. Mike Young was apparently a HUGE Star Wars fan! :-)

--The FWST has a Profile on future RedHawk Joaquin Arias. Arias, acquired in the Alex Rodriguez trade, is a SS known for his defense and I have heard Kelly comparisons.

--The FWST has a great Q&A with ex-RedHawk John Wasdin and his love of amusement parks.

--RedHawk Josh Rupe will start the Rangers First Intersquad Game on Thursday.

--A couple ex-RedHawks are still recovering from arm injuries. Todd Williams (sore right shoulder) is at least another week away from throwing. Ryan Drese (torn labrum) might open the year on the disabled list, which would allow him to make a few rehab starts in the minors (probably New Orleans) before he rejoins the Nationals.

--In today's Notes TR Sullivan talks about Kevin Mench's participation the the HR derby and Jason Botts (Pictured) off-season work out regime and work in the OF.

--The FWST has an Article about the Rangers new coaching staff, including former RedHawk manager and all around good guy Bobby Jones.

--Today's FWST Buzz has a Q&A session with probable RedHawk Brian Anderson.

--Today's FWST Rangers' Notes indicate that Rick Bauer is also in contention for the 5th roster spot. They also talked about Kevin Mench and Chad Allen's participation in the HR derby. Interestingly, the final round came down to Kevin and Clinton Lumberking Ian Gac.

--In today's DMN, Evan Grant has an article about Kevin Millwood mentoring young pitchers, including Josh Rupe and Thomas Diamond.

--Ex-Redhawk Brian Jordan is taking reps at 1B in his attempt to make the Braves as a reserve.

--Ex-Omaha Royal Zack Greinke has left Royals camp and returned home to Orlando for undisclosed personal reasons. Zach is a very nice and talented kid and you have to hope that this is nothing serious.

--Tacoma Rainier Chris Snelling took a full turn in batting practice for the first time yesterday. Chris is recovering from another torn ACL.

Pitching Contenders

--Two potential RedHawks have emerged as serious candidates for 25 man roster spots. They are former Oriole Rick Bauer and former Blue Jay Jesse Carlson. Adam Morris has an Excellent Write-up of Carlson on his site.

--Ex-RedHawk Kevin Mench along with probable RedHawk Adam Hyzdu and future RedHawk Ian Gac are competing in a HR contest against the Royals. Two ex-RedHawks Chad Allen (pictured) and Chris Richard are competing for the Royals.

--In the lastest FWST Spring Training Interview ex-RedHawk Gerald Laird discusses his great love of fishing.

--In Saturday's Buzz Ian Kinsler talked about what it is like to be in a video game, Kam Loe discusses Angel and Emo Ramirez talks about his new braces. Gripping stuff! :-) LOL

--Future RedHawk Thomas Diamond has been added to the List of potential 5th Starters.

--TR Sullivan has published his Minor League Report. Nothing very informative, but...

--Several familiar umpires have been chosen to participate in the WBC including personal favorite Adam Dowdy. Yes, sad but true...I do have favorite umpires! :-)

JRo Returns!

--Ex-RedHawk and personal favorite Jason Romano is returning to the PCL. He has signed a minor league deal with the Brewers. As you may remember, Jason joined the Isotopes last August after requesting his release from the Reds but only played 2 games before hurting his leg.

--RedHawk Nick Regilio has been shut down after experiencing more arm pain. He is scheduled to have an MRI today.

--The DMN has a nice article on RA Dickey and his knuckleball.

Random Thoughts

--Evan Grant has a great Profile on ex-RedHawk Hank Blalock (Pictured).

--John Sickles of Minor League Ball has released his Top 20 Rangers Prospects List. Most interesting is perhaps the inclusion of RedHawk Marshall McDougall at #18. I believe he is the first commentator to list future RedHawk Eric Hurley as the top prospect in the system.

--The Star Telegram has a nice article about probable RedHawk Jose Silva.

--Funny interview with R.A. Dickey in today's Spring Training Buzz.

--Another story on the most covered Ranger, Kam Loe's snake Angel.

--The FWST has an Article about Ian Kinsler and Mark DeRosa battling for the 2B job.

--The Rochester Redwings have a Must Read Interview with Twins prospect Pat Neshek. Pat is one of the coolest guys in baseball today not named Clint Barmes, and has a great website where he talks about baseball and autograph collecting. He is also willing to trade autographs with you, which I can personally attest to.

--AZ Central has a great article on ex-Rivercat Eric Byrnes.

--Ex-RedHawk Ramon Nivar arrived at spring training with a torn knee ligament suffered during winter ball. No word yet on the severity.

--Ex-RedHawk Doug Davis has been suffering from minor back soreness but it has not kept him from participating in workouts.

--In what can only be described as a stupid ban, Chad Cordero hasn't used his inhaler to treat his asthma in two months because Albuterol is a banned substance pursuant to the WBC.

--Personal favorite John Van Benschoten threw off flat ground Thursday. John is recovering from shoulder surgery.

--The Rockies have announced that personal favorite Clint Barmes will be their No. 2 hitter against righties but may lead off against left-handers.

Hank's a Brunette?

--Evan Grant has a pretty funny Report from Spring Training. Amongst the most interesting items was his tidbit that Hank Blalock (pictured) dyed his hair brown because "Everybody tells me it brings out the blue in my eyes." Have I mentioned lately how much I love Hank? Another moment of comedy was when the individual players named the team's theme song. Rod Barajas chose "Hanging Tough" by New Kids on the Block while Mike Young chose "Strangers in the Night" by Sinatra.

--Sign on San Diego has another excellent article on an ex-RedHawk. This article focuses on Chris Young. Excellent read.

--The Rangers have a nice article on probable 2006 RedHawk Joaquin Arias.

--TR Sullivan's Spring Training Report has several interesting tidbits. Amongst them is an update on ex-RedHawk Juan Dominguez, a note that Kam Loe's snake Angel made her first appearance of spring training, and my favorite quote from Josh Rupe "Anybody want to do a story on my Yorkie dog?" He also mentions that Nick Regilio is 100% and officially competing for a bullpen spot.

--Another Top Prospects list, this one by First Inning.

--The Orlando Sentinel has an interesting article on ex-RedHawk John Rocker and where he is now.

Tuesday, February 21, 2006

Rangers Sign Durazo

--The Rangers announced the signing of Erubiel Durazo to a minor league contract. This essentially guarantees that Jason Botts (pictured) will return to the RedHawks for the 2006 season.

--The Rangers are optomistic about their changes in the AL West this season.

--TR Sullivan has this week's Mailbag up where he talks about ex-RedHawks Mike Young and Hank Blalock.

--David Dellucci is having Second thoughts about playing in the WBC. This article has several other tidbits, including a statement that RA Dickey is in the running for the 5th spot in the rotation and a statement that future RedHawk Thomas Diamond sought out Kevin Millwood for help with his mechanics.

--Rotoworld has published their Top 10 Prospect List for all of the AL West teams, including the Rangers. RedHawks on the list include Ian Kinsler, Jason Botts and Josh Rupe. The list also includes the top 10 prospects for the past 3 years which is an interesting walk down memory lane.

--Mike Restovich is trying to relearn how to play 1B in an effort to get more playing time.

--Humberto Quintero says he is ready to battle Raul Chavez for a job backing up Astros catcher Brad Ausmus.

Monday, February 20, 2006

Spring Training Notes

--Ex-RedHawk Kam Loe (pictured) has apparently been told by pitching coach Mark Connor that a rotation spot with the Rangers was his to lose. Good for Kam who works hard and definitely deserves it!

--Connor is apparently still talking about RedHawk Josh Rupe and his chances of being the 5th Starter.

--Probable RedHawks Nick Trezniak and Keith McDonald are still suffering from back and knee problems respectively. As a result, catcher Kevin Richardson who logged some time in Frisco this season has been brought over from minor league camp.

--The Rangers have an article about ex-RedHawk Gerald Laird and the catching situation on their website. Buck Showalter is quoted as saying Gerald has to win the back up job and, to my reading at least, is implying Gerald has an attitude. I wonder if he isn't about to be traded and this is the start of the infamous "Rangers Spin Machine"? Everyone knows that Gerald does not want to be a backup, but he has been nothing but gracious about it as far as I know.

--The Nationals signed ex-RedHawk, RHP Kevin Gryboski to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. Gryboski was obtained by the Rangers in a disasterous trade last year at the trade deadline for promising minor leaguer Matt Lorenzo.

--Ex-RedHawk Ryan Drese has reportedly said he's fully recovered from the torn labrum that ended his 2005 season and ready to compete for a rotation spot in 2006 with the Nationals. That's interesting because I was told that Ryan would not pitch this year.

Sunday, February 19, 2006

Hank Arrives

--Ex-RedHawk Hank Blalock (pictured) arrived in camp a couple days early. The FWST has an article about Hank and his almost being traded this winter. TR Sullivan has a similar piece on Rangers.com.

--Sullivan also notes that Marshall McDougall will start the season on the DL. Expect him to again be a RedHawk when he returns to action. Sullivan also reports that the Rangers have offered Erubiel Durazo a minor league contract with a chance to win a spot on the roster as DH. Ummm, hello?? Have the Rangers forgotten that have a DH candidate in the person of RedHawks Jason Botts??

--In the same classy manner that he conducted his career, OF/Pitcher Brooks Kieschnick has announced his retirement.

--Pirates prospect John Van Benschoten's stiff throwing shoulder is showing improvement, and he hopes to resume throwing early this week.

--Ex-RedHawk, and now Orioles reliever, Todd Williams may not throw tomorrow because of some slight shoulder soreness.

--Former RedHawk Matt Miller is apparently a lock for a spot in Cleveland's bullpen.

OKC Marlins??

--Lt. Gov. Mary Fallin is reportedly trying to woo the Marlins to OKC. I don't see it happening. As much as OKCers want a professional team, this is not a baseball town so I don't see how we could support the team for 81 games per year. Plus I perfer watching minor league baseball and would only support this move if my buddies from Albuquerque (i.e. Mike Colangelo, Chris Ashby, Ryan Jurgenson etc) were promoted. Since that won't happen, I vote for the RedHawks! :-) LOL

--Juan Dominguez' troubles continue as his first workout was shortened Thursday because of high blood pressure. He pitched Friday without incident. Despite this, Juan is still the favorite to be the Rangers 5th starter. However, RedHawk Josh Rupe (pictured) continues to make noise and earn Rave Reviews. There is also a little blurb about R.A. Dickey and his knuckleball.

--Great tidbits from TR Sullivan in his latest article. Personal favorite Ron Mahay has had a great spring so far as he fights his way back from his stuggles in 2005. Another favorite, Kam Loe was singled out for his great attitude during drills. TR also notes that Nick Regilio is impressive in camp as he tries to win back a spot in the Rangers' pen and that Emo Ramirez has signed a contract for the 2006 season.

--Personal favorite Adam Wainwright (pictured) has signed a 2006 contract with the cardinals. Adam, received from the Braves in the JD Drew trade, has a good chance of making the Cardinals this season. Also signing contracts with the Cardinals were former RedHawk Randy Flores, OF Skip Schumacher, and the biggest jerk in minor league baseball Tyler Johnson.

--Dee Brown signed a minor league contract with the Royals. Not good news for former RedHawk Chad Allen who also signed a deal with the Royals.

--The Rockies are reportedly close to signing OF Ernie Young to a minor league contract. Such a signing may assure that former RedHawk Pete Zoccolillo starts the year in Tulsa.

--John Van Benschoten was held out of workouts on Friday after experiencing minor shoulder irration. John, a top pirates prospect, is trying to recover from shoulder surgery.

--Marshall McDougall, who is still recovering from wrist surgery, will not report to spring training until after his wife gives birth later this month. Marshall mentioned at our caravan that he would not be ready to play until March because of his wrist, so he is almost certainly slated to start the year with the RedHawks.

--According to the Denver Post, Colorado manager is not sure if Clint Barmes (pictured) will lead off or bat second. Last year Clint batted second as he broke into the majors, but I see no need for him to do that now. In addition, Hurdle announced that Garrett Atkins has earned the 5th spot in the batting order. Sounds like it is going to be a great year for my favorite left side of the infield in MLB!

--Mariners prospect and personal favorite Travis Blackley who underwent labrum surgery last February, is back to throwing bullpen sessions. If he keeps up this pace, look for him to join the Mariners after the all-star break.

--The OTHER Kelly shortstop (and now OF) Kelly Johnson has recovered from arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow during the offseason. He is expected to battle Ryan Langerhans for the starting job in the Braves' right field.

--Former RedHawk Scott Erickson signed a minor league deal with the MFYs and former 89er Benji Gil inked a minor league deal with the Royals.

Pitchers and Catchers Report!

--One of the most exciting days of the year occurred yesterday when pitchers and catchers reported to spring training. Today is the first full day of workouts. This signals that we are only a month and a half away from the best day of the year (opening day for those of you who don't know!! :-)

--The Rangers have finally announced the signing of personal favorite Tim Olson (pictured) to a minor league contract! Look for Tim to play 3B, SS, 2B and OF for the RedHawks.

--Several former RedHawks have signed minor league contracts including Donnie Sadler (Diamondbacks), Rob Bell (Indians), Hector Mercado (Tigers), Ryan Snare (Kansas City) (pictured), and Ruben Mateo (Nationals).

--Several of familiar PCLers have also signed minor league deals including Tony Alvarez (Orioles), Matt Padgett (Cubs),Javier Lopez (White Sox), Derek Wathan (Reds), Pete Bauer (Astros), Chris Truby, Brad Cresse and Justin Reid (Dodgers), Clayton Andrews (Brewers), David Matranga (Padres), and Todd Sears (Mariners).

--There is an article on the Rangers website which makes it sound like Jason Botts will be returning to OKC for the 2006 season.

Sunday, February 12, 2006

Random Thoughts

--Former RedHawk Chad Allen (pictured) has signed a minor league deal with the Royals and has been invited to spring training. Best of luck to Chad who, as many of us know, got screwed royally by the Rangers last season.

--The Rockies purchased the contract of Jamey Carroll from the Nationals. Carroll is the older brother of personal favorite and Nationals' minor leaguer Wes Carroll.

--The Nationals signed RHP Santiago Ramirez and OF Kenny Kelly to minor league contracts.

--The DMN has what can only be described as a strange ST preview which contains info on several current and former RedHawks.

--The FWST has another article on baseball in the Domincan inlcuding info on Juan Dominguez and Edison Volquez.

Thursday, February 9, 2006

Ex-RedHawk signings

--Two of my favorite Ex-RedHawks should be returning to the PCL in 2006. Pitcher Mike Bacsik signed a minor league deal with the Nationals (New Orleans) and OF Pete Zoccolillo (pictured) signed a minor league deal with the Rockies (Colorado Springs).

--Former Frisco Roughrider Brandon Larson signed a minor league contract with the Nationals.

--2B Bo Hart and OF Barry Wesson signed minor league contracts with the Rockies.

--In this week's mailbag Jonathan Mayo discusses several PCL prospects, including Taylor Buckholtz and Felix Pie.

Top 10 Prospects Announced

--Baseball America has announced their list of the Top 10 Rangers Prospects. Edison Volquez (pictured) was named the top prospect followed by John Danks, Thomas Diamond and Joaquin Arias. All four should log some time with the RedHawks this season. RedHawks Ian Kinsler and Jason Botts were named the number 6 and 8 prospects respectively. BA also listed their "Best Tools" for the system which included RedHawks Jason Botts (Best Power Hitter) and Josh Rupe (Best Slider). Also receiving nods were personal favorite Scott Feldman (Best Control) and Tug Hulett (Best Strike-Zone Judgement). BA also has a detailed scouting report and chat linked off the page, but you must be a subscriber to access them.

--MLB.com has put out their 2006 AL West Preview. They pick the Rangers to finish last in the division.

--The Star Telegram had an interesting Article about the Rangers efforts in the Dominican.

--TR Sullivan has another Mailbag out. He discusses several current and former RedHawks including Jason Botts, Francisco Cordero and CJ Wilson.

--Signon San Diego has a great article on former RedHawk Adrian Gonzalez (pictured) and his return home to play for the Padres.

--The Rangers have an interesting article about their outfield options for the 2006 season.

--The Rockies Mailbag had a little blip about Clint and Garrett and the young prospects in the organization.

--The Nashville Sounds will recieve a new ballpark for the 2007 season. I know I am in the minority, but I really liked Greer Stadium and will be sorry to see it go.

--Former RedHawk Travis Hughes (pictured) agreed to a one year contract with the Nationals.

--Scott Seabol signed a minor league contract with the Marlins.

--Former RedHawks Kevin Mench and Craig Monroe each agreed to one year $2.8 million contracts with the Rangers and Tigers respectively.

--Trent Durrington signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox.

Pitchers and Catchers report next week, so hopefully I will be able to do more regular reports. Thank god its baseball season again!! :-)

Ex-RedHawk spotings

--Three more ex-RedHawks have signed with the Minnesota Twins, all to minor league contracts. They are pitchers Pete Munro and Ryan Glynn and OF Ruben Sierra.

--All around cool guy John Wetteland (pictured) has accepted the job as the National's bullpen coach. Frisco won't be as much fun without him.

--Gabe Kapler is expected to re-up with the Red Sox. He won't be ready to play until May or June however.

--One time uber prospect Kurt Ainsworth will try to make it back from arm trouble with the Dodgers. He signed a minor league contract so expect to see him in town with the 51s. I also heard an unsubstantiated rumor that former

--Ex-RedHawk Spike Lundberg also signed a deal with the Dodgers.

--The Rangers signed former closer Antonio Alfonseca to a minor league contract. If he has a good spring training, I'd be surprised if he ever sniffs the RedHawks.

--T.R. Sullivan's mail bag is up on the Rangers site. Lot of RedHawk related materials (i.e. Josh Rupe (pictured), Gerald Laird). Interestingly, he seems to imply that Thomas Diamond will start the year in the RedHawks rotation.

--Perennial PCLer Luke Allen (pictured) has joined the IL,signing a minor league contract with my Red Sox.

Arbitration Eligibles

--Several arbitration eligible players have signed around the league. They include former RedHawks Carlos Pena (Tigers) and Todd Williams (Orioles), Astros SS Adam Everett, BlueJays 1B Lyle Overbay and former Rangers minor leaguer Aaron Harang (Reds).

--The Rangers signed most of their aribtration eligible players including Rod Barajas, Mark Teixeira, Adam Eaton and Brad Wilkerson. Former RedHawks Kevin Mench and Gary Matthews, Jr. and Vincente Padilla are still negotiating.

--Some minor league signings over the past week include Former RedHawks RHP Aaron Sele (Dodgers), RHP Jeff Nelson (Cardinals), LHP Michael Tejera (Giants), and RHP Jamey Wright (Giants). Non-RedHawk signees include Ryan Christianson and Shawn Camp (Devil Rays), and Carlos Rivera and Tom Martin (Rockies).

--The Rockies have another nice Article on Danny Ardoin on their website.

--Now that we are getting close to spring training, I would love to get some feedback on what you do or don't like about this site. Is there anything you'd like to see added or taken away? Once the season starts, would you like to see a roster added? Seriously, any and all thoughts would be appreciated to help improve. I have links on the left-hand side of the page to send me an e-mail. If you would prefer to remain nameless, you can also leave me an entry in my guestbook--that link is also on the left-hand side of the page. Either medium you chose, I am the only one who can read them. Thanks!!

Just a Few Transactions

--The Rangers agreed on a one-year $775,000 contract with arbitration eligible pitcher Joaquin Benoit. They have seven additional arbitration players they are negotiating with including former RedHawks Kevin Mench and Gary Matthews, Jr.

--It looks like 2002 Rolaids Relief Pitcher of the year, Joe Valentine will be returning to the PCL. Joe, who has spent the past couple of years in the Reds organization, signed a minor league contract with the Astros.

--Pitcher-outfielder Brooks Kieschnick has signed a minor league contract with the Orioles and was invited to spring training.

--Personal favorite and Pirates pitcher John Van Benschoten has resumed throwing following arm surgery and is expected to be ready to start the season.

--There will be some changes to the PCL coaching staffs that come through town. Former Iowa hitting coach Pat Listach is now the manager for the Cub's A-ball affiliate in Daytona. Former Salt Lake Manager Dino Ebel is the new 3B coach for the Angels. Former Omaha Royal Joe Espada is now a coach for the Marlins A-ball affiliate. Former RedHawk Randy Knorr is the manager of the National's A-ball team in Potomac, VA.

More Minor League Transactions

--Several former RedHawks have signed with new teams for the 2006 season. They include RP Hector Mercado (Detroit), P C.J. Nitkowski (Pittsburgh), OF Brian Jordan (Atlanta), and Billy Sylvester (Washington). Former RedHawks pitchers Bart Miadich and Aaron Myette returned from Japan to sign with Tampa Bay and Philadelphia respectively.

--RedHawks catcher Keith McDonald has decided against retiring and signed a new minor league contract with the Rangers. It will be interesting to see how that is handled since the RedHawks already have C Nick Trzneiak and C/3B Jamie Burke on the roster.

--Pitcher Nick Regilio's minor league contract has an clause giving him the right to declare free agency if he is not on the 25 man roster by July 1st.

--Some of my favorite PCLers have also signed contracts for the 2006 season. They include Andy Pratt (Philadelphia), David Kelton (Atlanta), Ben Kozlowski (Reds) and Wayne Franklin and Travis Driskill (Tampa Bay).

--Personal favorite Dave Krynzel (Nashville- Brewers) will undergo surgery Thursday to repair a broken right clavicle. He is expected to miss at least eight weeks.

--The winter leagues are now over and I wanted to share the impressive stats of former RedHawk G. Tom Evans (pictured). Tom lead the league in HRs (17), RBIs (52), Doubles (17), OBP (.466), SLG (.696), Extra Base hits (35), and Runs scored (48). Huge congratulations to Tom who I still maintain is one of the best defensive 3B I have seen play. As far as I know he has not yet signed a deal for 2006 so it will be interesting to see if he can get a major league deal.

Happy 2006!

--Now that all the players in question have passed their physicals, the Rangers/Padres trade has been formally announced. The Rangers give up former RedHawks Chris Young and Adrian Gonzalez (pictured) as well as OF Termel Sledge and receive Adam Eaton, Akinori Otsuka and minor league catcher Billy Killian. None of the new players are expected to see time with the RedHawks.

--Pitcher Brian Anderson signed a minor league deal with a spring training invite. Anderson, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery is expected to spend time with the RedHawks this season as an insurance pitcher in case the Rangers rotation struggles or has an injury.

--RHP Jose Diaz also signed a minor league contract with a spring training invite. Diaz spent time with the Indians last year in both AA and AAA. He may start the year with Frisco, but should be called up to the RedHawks at some point during the season.

--OF Mike Restovich and IF Augie Ojeda signed minor league contracts with the Cubs.

--The RedHawks/Rangers Caravan is this Friday. This year it is opened to the public ($30.00 per ticket) in addition to season ticketholders. The RedHawks have the details on their website. RedHawks Marshall McDougall and Josh Rupe along with former RedHawks Manager Bobby Jones will be in attendance.

Happy Holidays!

--Former RedHawk Jason Hart (pictured) has signed a minor league deal with the Twins with an invitation to Spring Training. Probably a good move for Jason who was clearly not in the Rangers plans.

--The Rangers and my Red Sox appear to be the front runners for Kevin Millwood. Both teams have apparently made 4 year offers. If Millwood choses the Rangers, it will pretty much cement RA Dickey's return to the RedHawks next season.

--My buddy Jeff Baker will play some outfield this spring in an attempt to make the Rockies as a bench player. Jeff has already lost too much time to injuries over the past couple of years and probably will be hurt developmentally if he is forced to sit on the bench.

--The Diamondbacks have allegedly traded Troy Glaus and Sergio Santos to the Blue Jays for Orlando Hudson and Miguel Batista. This is good news for Rangers fans since Hudson and Batista were repeatedly named in Kevin Mench trade rumors.

--The "prize" of the Travis Hafner trade, Einar Diaz has returned to the Indians on a minor league deal.

--In an interview with the Knoxville News, Knoxville native and Rangers' pitching coach Mark Connor said that he thought that Josh Rupe has probably got the best stuff of anybody in the organization.

--The Rockies have an interesting Q&A with former OSU star Matt Holliday on their website.

--The Tulsa Drillers won the Bob Freitas award for AA-team by Baseball America.

Welcome back Brian Sik!

--Former RedHawk pitcher Brian Sikorski is close to signing a deal with the San Diego Padres. According to Rotoworld, he will be used as a replacement for Akinori Otsuka in the bullpen. Congrats Brian and great to have you back in the States!!

--The Rangers resigned Nick Regilio to a minor league contract. Nick is expected to be ready to start the season so look for him to be on the RedHawks opening day roster.

--Also signing a minor league contract with their team after being non-tendered are: Ryan Spillboughs (Colo) and Wes Obermueller (Atlanta).

--Former RedHawk pitching coach Lee Tunnell is the new pitching coach of the Louisville Riverbats. Best of luck Lee!

Major Rangers Trade

--The Rangers have a major trade in place pending physicals. Once completed, Texas will acquire starting pitcher Adam Eaton, reliever Akinori Otsuka and low-A ball catcher Billy Killian in exchange for Ex-RedHawks Adrian Gonzalez (pictured) and Chris Young and OF Termel Sledge who was acquired in the Soriano trade. There is some thought that Adrian, an San Diego native, may be flipped to Boston for David Wells. Adrian, who was blocked at 1B by Mark Teixiera, needed to be traded and this could be a good situation for him. Best of luck to Adrian and Betsy and thanks for a couple of years of great defense Adrian! Another positive of this trade is that it now frees up 1B for Jason Hart if he choses to return to the RedHawks.

--RHP Rico Rodriguez was selected by the Phillies as the PTBNL in the Vincente Padilla trade. Rico allegedly angered Rangers management last season when he went on the DL rather than accepting an assignment with the RedHawks. Add that to the fact that he was out of options, and there was a good chance he would have been lost on waivers anyway. Regardless, Rico was always a lot of fun and will be missed.

--The Rangers non-tendered Ex-Redhawk Nick Regilio. The Rangers may try to sign him to a minor league deal, but he is now a free agent and can sign anywhere. Other PCLer's who were non-tendered include: Jamal Strong, Joe Dillon (whose rights have reportedly been sold to the Yomiuri Giants of Japan), Rick Short, Scott Seabol, Mike Mahoney, Ryan Spilbroughs and Ken Harvey. All become free agents but can sign a minor league contract with their organization.

The Mariners designated infielder, and former OU Star Greg Dobbs for assignment.

--Ex-RedHawk Rudy Seanez signed an incentive laden deal with my Red Sox.

--Personal favorite and relief pitcher Joe Valentine was non-tendered by the Reds. Joe was once a top prospect in the White Sox and A's system who was named the best minor league relief pitcher of the year in 2002. I'd love to see him end up with the RedHawks.

--IF Chris Truby signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers. Look for him to come to town with the 51's.

--Ex-RedHawk David Newhan signed a one-year deal with the Orioles.

--Ex-RedHawk Steve Karsay signed a minor league contract with the Indians.

--I'm heart broken. Not only did Johnny Damon NOT resign with my Red Sox, but he also had the gall to sign with the MFYs.

Minor League Signings

--The Marlins have announced several minor league signings, including most of my favorite non-RedHawk PCLers. The players they have signed include: OFs Mike Colangelo (pictured) Chris Ashby, Matt Cepicky and ex-89er Mark Little, Ps Chris George, and ex-RedHawk Brad Clontz, and IFs Jason Wood and Mickey Lopez. They also invited C Ryan Jorgenson to spring training. Once again it looks like Albuquerque is going to have a great team.

--The Rangers signed ex-uber prospect D'Angelo Jimenez to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training. He is expected to compete with RedHawk Ian Kinsler to be the Rangers' starting 2B next season.

--The Rangers acquired pitcher Vincente Padilla for a PTBNL. It is believed that RedHawk Rico Rodriguez is one of 2 players the Phillies have to chose from.

--Ex-RedHawk Doug Brocail signed a one year deal with the Padres.

--Ex-RedHawks Justin Thompson and Wilfredo Rodriguez signed minor league contracts with Brewers. Both are likely to come to town with the Nashville Sounds.

--According an an article on the National's website, personal favorite Rick Short (pictured) will play in Japan next season. Rick is a great guy who gained national prominence this season by almost hitting .400 this season (he ended the year at .383) and by making his major league debut after 10 years in the minors. Best of luck Rick, but we are really going to miss playing with you!

--The White Sox have acquired pitcher Javier Vazquez from the Diamondbacks for Pitchers Orlando Hernandez, Luis Vizcaino and uber prospect Chris Young. Young sound be coming to town next season with the Sidewinders so I am looking forward to the opportunity to see if he lives up to his hype.

--Pitcher Joey Eichen resigned with the Nationals. Joey came to town last season with the Zephyrs on a rehab assignment.

--The Rangers resigned ex-RedHawk Brian Shouse to a one year contract.

--Ex-RedHawk Mike Lamb signed a 1-year $750,000 contract with the Astros. Congrats Mike!

--The Royals designated Ken Harvey, Matt Diaz and Shawn Camp for assignment.

Saturday, December 10, 2005

Jayson's Back!

--The Rangers have resigned pitcher Jayson Durocher (pictured) to a minor league contract. Jayson was a 2001 RedHawk before he went on to make his major league debut with the Milwaukee Brewers. Jayson has been sidelined with injuries over the past couple of years and is attempting to make a comeback. The Rangers also signed pitcher Jose Silva who has spent the past couple of years in Mexico.

--RHP Kevin Jarvis signed a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks.

--IF Scott McClain signed a minor league deal with the A's. He was with the iCubs last year.

--OF Jack Cust signed a minor league deal with the Padres. Former Padres and Portland Beaver Chris Oxspring is going to Japan. Best of luck to you Chris!

--According to the Boston Herald, The Red Sox may sign former RedHawk Ken Huckaby to replace Doug Mirabelli as Jason Varitek's backup and Tim Wakefield's personal catcher.

Post-Rule 5 Draft

--The RedHawks did not lose anyone in the Rule 5 draft, but Frisco utilityman Cam Coughlan was selected by the A's in the AAA portion of the draft. The RedHawks potential gained 3 players: OFs Jayce Tingler from the Blue Jays and Alexi Ogando from the A's, and pitcher Esalen Soto from the Mariners. In addition, the Rangers did indeed trade IF Esteban German (pictured) to the Royals for Fabio Castro the first player taken in the Rule 5 draft. Look for Esteban to be the Royals starting catcher next season. Ba's John Manuel has a complete breakdown of the draft.

--Former Nashville Sound J.R. House has decided to return to baseball, after spending a year as a backup quarterback for the University of West Virginia.

--Ex-Ranger Farm hand Jason Grabowski has signed a deal to play in Japan. Jason came to town with the Tacoma Rainiers and Sacramento Rivercats.

Major Going Ons!

--The Rangers pulled the trigger on their first major trade, dealing Alphonso Soriano in exchange for outfielders Brad Wilkerson and Termel Sledge (who appeared in the 2002 AAA All-Star game here at the Brick) and RHP Armando Galarraga who was considered to be one of the National's top pitching prospects. This trade could result in other trades as the Rangers now have outfield depth and OF Kevin Mench is in demand by many teams. In addition, there is now a chance that RedHawk Ian Kinsler will be the Rangers starting 2B next season.

--The Padres traded Sean Burroughs (pictured) to Tampa Bay for Dewon Brazelton. This is interesting because it is an exchange of once top prospects.

--The Rockies declined to offer arbitration to former RedHawks Jamey Wright and Todd Greene.

--The Rockies acquired catcher Yorvit Torrealba from the Mariners for a PTBNL. He will compete with Former RedHawk Danny Ardoin to be starting catcher.

--The Blue Jays have acquired Lyle Overbay and a prospect from the Brewers in exchange for RHP David Bush, OF Gabe Gross and SP Zach Jackson. This is an interesting trade because it sets what a team can get in exchange for a 1B and the Rangers are actively shopping RedHawk Adrian Gonzalez (pictured).

--According to NewsDay, the Rangers and Mets are discussing a trade involving Kris Benson and former RedHawks Juan Dominguez and Laynce Nix.

--The Rockies have acquired LHP Ray King from the Cardinals for OF Larry Bigbie and 2B Aaron Miles. This should cement Clint Barmes' (picutred) spot at the top of the order next season.

--The Giants declined to offer arbitration to Brett Tomko. The Rangers have already made an offer to Brett.

--The Rangers signed John Wasdin to a major league contract. They declined to offer arbitration to any of their players, including Kenny Rogers. That means they receive no compensation (i.e. draft picks) if another team signs any of these players. It also means that, if resigned, none of the 6 players can play for the Rangers major league squad until May 1.

--Today is the Rule 5 draft so it will be interesting to see what, if any, RedHawks are taken. Baseball Prospectus has a brief overview as well as a listing of their Top 20 prospects (subscribers only). Amongst the players discussed are RedHawks John Hudgins (pictured) and Drew Meyer. Baseball Analysts also weigh in with their thoughts on the Rule 5 draft. And today's Rule 5 coverage wraps up with Baseball America. Plenty material here if you are interested.

--This was a post from TR Sullivan of the FWST on a message board this morning: "The Rangers are trading infielder Esteban German to the Royals for the first pick in the Rule 5 draft....They are expected to take a pitcher."

RedHawks have a New Manager and Pitching Coach

--Pursuant to a release on the RedHawks website, our 2006 coaching staff has been set. Former Frisco manager Tim Ireland is our new manager, Andy Hawkins who has spent time as pitching coach with the Rangers Single A affiliates in our new pitching coach and Mike Boulanger returns as hitting coach and Chris DeLucia as trainer. No mention on whether Scott Barr returns as strength and conditioning coach. I for one don't understand why Lee Tunnell was let go. Of course, I also did not agree with the Rangers letting Bruce Crabbe and Glenn Abbott last season either. I've heard good things about both Ireland and Hawkins so hopefully they come in and lead us to a PCL title in 2006.

--A few more minor league signings. Personal favorite, LHP Dusty Bergman (pictured) has signed a minor league contract with the MFY. Dusty, if you are reading this, I am NOT happy with you! :-( Ex-Iowa Cub Jermaine VanBuren was traded to the Red Sox, Ex-Memphis Redbird Jimmy Journell signed a minor league contract with the Reds and Ex-Portland Beaver Jason Kershner signed a minor league contract with the Brewers.

--RedHawk Esteban German (pictured) is continuing his hot run in the Dominican, leading the league in steals (21) and runs scored (24) and is also third in average (.336). RedHawk Juan Dominguez has made his Dominican Winter League debut, giving up one run and 4 hits in 1.1 innings of relief.

--Over in Venezuela, Ex-RedHawk Tom Evans continues to cruise. He currently leads the league in runs scored (35) and RBIs (37) and is 2nd in homers (13) and 3rd in batting (.359). He's OBP is also high, do largerly to the 38 walks he has drawn in 37 games. Round Rock’s Luke Scott, an OSU product, is hitting .439 with 17 runs scored and 17 RBIs in 17 games.

Rating the Rangers Minor Leaguers

--Noted minor league expert John Sickels listed his top 20 Rangers prospects at Minor League Ball. For those of you who want to learn about some future RedHawks, this is an interesting read. Not surprisingly, his top prospect is Thomas Diamond (pictured). More surprising, but great to see, were John Hudgins at #8 and Marshall McDougall at #20. Wes Littleton was listed at #18 which seems AWFULLY low to me. RHP Mark Roberts, an OU product, was listed as the #16 prospect. That surprised me a bit, especially since he struggled badly in the AFL. However, he is young and did well in AA after skipping High A ball, so it will be interesting to see how he performs in 2006.

--MiLB has also published its organizational report on the Rangers prospects. They track their five favorites from the beginning of the season including RedHawks John Hudgins, Adrian Gonzalez, and Ian Kinsler. Ex-RedHawk Kam Loe is also recognized for having a cinderella year. Current RedHawk Ruddy Yan and future RedHawks, Scott Feldman and Jim Fasano are recognized for having 2005 Breakout Years. The article wraps up with discussions of the Rangers top draft picks in 2004 and 2005. Again, for those of you interested in future Redhawks (and you should be!!), it's a good read.

--The Rangers have a nice article on their website about Emo Ramirez and his role in the 2006 bullpen.

--Huge kudos to Brian Giles who decided being at home was more important than money, and resigned with the Padres.

A few minor league transactions

--Not much going on in the world of minor league baseball, though the big league clubs continue to hand out huge (and in some cases stupid) contracts. Some of the recent minor league signings include:

  • RHP Dennis Tankersley has signed a minor league contract with the Cardinals. Clearly Dennis is no longer considered a "can't miss" prospect, but he still has great stuff so hopefully he will be able to resurrect his career.
  • LHP Randy Williams cleared waivers and resigned with the Rockies.
  • LHP Cliff Bartosh and SS Nate Frese have resigned with the Cubs. Both should start the year in Iowa.
  • The Angels released SLC Stinger and LHP Willie Collazo.
  • Former Ranger minor leaguer, OF Tydus Meadows resigned with the Dodgers. Look for him to spend time in Vegas this year.
  • Ex-Memphis bird Bud Smith inked a minor league deal with the Twins.

--Congrats to Former Sky Sox Ryan Shealy who was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2005 CONCEBE Regional Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

--For those who are planning on attending the Winter Meetings in Dallas next week, MiLB has a great how to guide.

An Active Hot Stove

--TexasRangers.com is reporting that Tim Ireland is the front runner to become our new Manager. Not sure how I feel about that. Ireland is a John Hart boy and essentially took over Paul Carey's job as the manager of the AA team when he joined the system. He seems to be a decent enough manager (If I am not mistaken he is the manager who led Frisco to the Texas League Championship in 2004) and the players seem to like him. I guess I just need to put my personal biases aside and take a wait and see attitude! :-)

--Some major trades have gone down over the weekend. There is the Josh Beckett to the Red Sox trade discussed below. Of signifigance to RedHawks fans, the Marlins got 2 of the Red Sox top tier prospects (Hanley Ramirez and Anibel Sanchez) as well as 2 other pitchers. Hanley is favored to break camp with the Marlins, but Anibel should see some time in Albuquerque this season which immediately improves their pitching staff. With all the trades the Marlins have been involved in so far they have gotten good young players. If it continues, that should bolster the Albuquerque team for a few years. At the same time, the Rangers are looking to trade for at least one starting pitcher which makes it likely that at least one current or future key RedHawk player will be traded. Add that to the lack of a manager and pitching coach at this point in the season, and it will be interesting to see how we play next season.

--Other major trades that have happened this weekend include Carlos Delgado being dealt to the Mets in exchange for 3 minor leaguers, including a top pitching prospect named Yusmeiro Petit. It's likely all 3 prospects will see time in Albquerque next season.

--The White Sox also joined in the fun, acquiring 1B Jim Thome from the Phillies for OF Aaron Rowand, LHP Daniel Haigwood and a player to be named. Both the White Sox and the Phillies have their AAA team in the IL so this trade doesn't affect the RedHawks at all, other than to help set the standard for these kind of trades.

--It's being reported that the Blue Jays have signed B.J. Ryan to a 5 year, $47 million deal. Unbelievable...if this is true, it has totally skewed the free agent market for pitchers this season and makes it much more likely that key RedHawks will be traded since the Rangers are practicing "financial flexibility" and aren't likely to drop down big bucks for a free agent pitcher. The BlueJays also reportedly made a deal to AJ Burnett. Interesting to see if they break the bank and pursue him, or if they become one more team crossed off of his list.

--Ex-RedHawk Tim Crabtree (pictured) has signed a minor league deal with the Tigers. Best of luck to him as he tries to get back to the majors!

--Congrats to my pal Garrett Atkins (pictured) who named named the 3B on the Topp's All Rookie Team! Garrett worked really hard this year and definitely deserves the honor! You can vote for Garrett as the TYIB Rookie of the year by clicking Here.

--Former RedHawk G. Tom Evans continues to heat up the VWL. He is a league leader in several categories, including being 2nd in HRs (10), First in both Anotadas (31) and Inpulsadas (32), which if my Spanish is correct is RBIs and walks, and his .357 average is good for 5th in the league. If he keeps this up he should definitely get at least an invite to spring training if not a guranteed major league contract.

Beckett's a Red Sox

--It looks like the deal which would bring Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to Texas in exchange for Hank Blalock and John Danks (pictured) is off. Personally I am glad to see this deal fall through. I am not a Rangers fan, but I am a big fan of Hank and I didn't want to see him traded. I am also looking forward to seeing John Danks as a RedHawk. The Red Sox fan in me is happy to see that Beckett will be traded to the Sox, and I hope he can remain injury free and make it a good trade. It's tough to let a prospect like Hanley Ramirez go, but when you have a shot at a 25-year old ace, you have to take it. Several Rangers commentators have weighed in, including Evan Grant, TR Sullivan, and Jim Reeves.

--The Boston Globe is reporting that the Red Sox may be interested in Adrian Gonzalez to platoon at 1B with Youk. The Rangers are reportedly interested in AA OF Brandon Moss while the Red Sox reportedly would offer catcher Kelly Shoppach. This trade doesn't make much sense from the Red Sox point of view, and I don't expect it to happen. I do look for Adrian to be traded this off-season however.

--Lots of transactions today. Alfredo Amezaga (of watermelon bubblegum fame) signed a major league contract with the Marlins. He is probably insurance in case Hanley Ramirez struggles. The Brewers signed the AAA catching tandem of Mark Johnson and Mike Rivera which means ex-RedHawk Julio Mosquera will be looking for another team to play with in 2006. The Brewers also signed knuckleballer Jared Fernandez, Jerome Gamble and Brett Abernathy.

--The Padres acquired Bobby Hill from the Pirates for a player to be named.

--In Venezuela, Luke Scott (pictured) continues to have the hot hand, pushing his average up to .348. Ex-RedHawk G. Tom Evans is also playing well, posting a .329 average while leading the league in RBIs (30) and is 2nd in homeruns (9). Even more impressive, he has managed to draw 33 walks in 29 games. Hopefully this is a sign that he is returning to form. Tom was a top prospect for the Blue Jays and the 2000 starting 3B for the Rangers until rotator cuff surgery hampered his play. Tom is a great guy and still one of the best defensive 3B I have ever seen, so let's hope he is given a shot by a team this spring.

Rule 5 Ready

--The Dallas Morning News is reporting that a deal between the Marlins and Rangers is likely to be completed by Monday. The deal would send former RedHawk Hank Blalock (pictured) and future RedHawk John Danks to the Marlins in exchange for pitcher Josh Beckett and 3B Mike Lowell. Not sure how to feel about this deal. I'm not a Rangers fan, but I understand that they need pitching and Beckett would be a great pick up. Hank's my pal though, and I will really miss him if he isn't there when I go to Rangers games. I can't even imagine what is going through his head right now. He lives and breathes Rangers baseball and it is the only team he has ever known. Most of his friends are in Texas and he's bought a house there. I'm sure it would be nice to live near the beach again (he's from San Diego) but he doesn't really strike me as the South Beach type. Personally, I hope this deal falls through, but if not, like I said I will really miss Hank and wish him only the best. Well this morning (Sunday) the DMN is backpeddling saying that a deal is "likely" if the Rangers decide to include Danks. And apparently my Red Sox and the Tigers are also expressing interest in Beckett which is what is upping the ante. The Palm Beach Post speculates that the Rangers may try to flip RedHawk Adrian Gonzalez for a pitcher to be included in this deal instead of Danks. They also speculate that Hank will be flipped by the Marlins who already have a young 3B.

--Lots of transactions have occurred involving some of my favorite PCLer's as teams set their rosters in anticipation of the Rule 5 draft. In general terms, any player who has 3 years of service time (4 years if he signed when he was 18 or younger) who is not added to his team's 40-man roster is eligible to be selected by another team and added to their 40-man roster. The draft price is $50,000 and the player drafted must stay in the majors the whole season or be offered back to his original team for $25,000. Marshall McDougall (pictured) is an example of a Rule 5 draft pick made by the Rangers in 2003 (from Cleveland). As many of you know, Marshall did not spend any time in the majors in 2003. However, Texas made a deal with Cleveland which allowed them to keep Marshall and send him to the minor leagues.

To make matters even more confusing, there is also a minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft. Players not added to a team's AAA roster are available for selection during the AAA phase of the draft and players not protected on a team's AA roster are eligible for selection in the AA portion of the draft. However, unlike the major league portion of the draft, there is no requirement that a player stay on a specific team's roster (i.e. a player selected in the AAA phase can be sent to AA). Pete Zoccolillo, Andyrew Bienbrink and Jeff Pickler are examples of players the Rangers have selected in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft. If you look at the RedHawks "official" roster on Monday you will see the names of several players who you have probably never heard of and who probably will not see any time with the RedHawks this season. That is because the Rangers will add their most desirable prospects on the RedHawks roster to protect them. Any player who is on the RedHawks roster (but not the 40-man roster) is eligble to be chosen ONLY in the major league portion of the draft. Since most of those players will not be capable of spending a full year in the majors, it makes it less likely that another team will draft them. Even if a player from the RedHawks roster is drafted, remember that the drafting team will have to offer him back to the Rangers if he is not kept in the majors all season.

--With that background, the Rangers have added four players to their 40-man roster. Current RedHawk Ian Kinsler (2B), Frisco SS Joaquin Arias, RHP Omar Beltre who spent the 2005 season in the Dominican because of visa issues and RHP Wes Littleton (Frisco). Wes had been on the bubble, put a great AFL season pushed him on to the roster. Congrats Wes! Several notable players were also left off the Roster including RedHawks John Hudgins, Drew Meyer and Kelvin Jimenez. Outfielders Vince Sinisi (Frisco) and Anthony Webster (Bakersfield) were also left unprotected. Hard to guess who may be selected. Following his strong AFL season and already known for stellar defense, I would not be surprised to see Drew selected and stick in the majors as a utility player. Maybe even by Grady Fuson's Padres. I also expect that Fuson will try and grab John Hudgins (pictured), a player he originally drafted and who has fallen out of favor with the Rangers since they don't like "pitchability" guys. It's not likely that John would make the Padres squad out of spring training, but I anticipate that Grady may draft him with the intention of working out a trade at the end of spring training to keep him and send him to Portland.

--Other key players added to 40-man Rosters around the league include OF Nick Gorneault (Salt Lake) (pictured), LHP Bobby Livingston (Tacoma), RHP Pat Neshek (Twins), and RHP Ricky Nolasco (Iowa).

--To make room for the new 40-man additions, several players were designated for assignment and/or released, including: RHP Jared Gothreaux (Round Rock), RHP Dustin Moseley (Salt Lake), LHP Randy Williams (Colo Springs), 2B Mike Fontenot, 2B Richard Lewis and LHP Russ Rohlicek (Iowa), IF Ramon Santiago (Tacoma), Former Round Rock player, IF Todd Self (Mets), OFs Michael Restovich and Tike Redman and 2B Bobby Hill (Pirates), Former RedHawk Colby Lewis, and Former Frisco RoughRider Ben Kozlowski (Reds).

--Former RedHawk rehabber Gabe Kapler was released by the Red Sox to clear a spot on the 40-man roster, but will be signed to a minor league contract by the team.

--The Royals have signed several players to minor league deals including former RedHawks Chris Richard and Victor Santos. Also signing with the Royals were Mike Coolbaugh (pictured) and Wilson Valdez.

--Former RedHawk Matt Roney has signed a minor league deal with the A's.

--Former RedHawk Jose Veras has signed with the MFYs. :-(

--The Brewers re-signed former RedHawk, RHP Rick Helling to a one-year, $850,000 contract.

--According to Ken Rosenthal RedHawk catcher Gerald Laird is a "hot" trade commodity, drawing interest from at least 5 teams.

--According to a Rangers' Press Release Orel Hershiser has been promoted to Exective Director to the President (a position to groom him for becoming a GM), Bullpen coach Mark Conner has been promoted to pitching coach and Dom Chiti (director of player personnel) will be the new bullpen coach. It has also formally been announced that Bobby Jones was promoted to take DeMarlo's 1B coaching job.

--Colorado 1B Ryan Shealy went 4-for-4 with a homer and two doubles to lead Team USA to a 9-3 win over Panama in their Olympic qualifying game. That gives Team USA a 4-0 record.

More signings

--The Rangers have traded for RHP Jon Leicester (pictured) who had been with the Chicago Cubs organization. Jon was a 2000 draft pick by the Cubs and put up a 5.51 ERA in 98 IP. . He made the Cubs' Opening Day roster and had a 9.00 ERA and 0-2 record in six games during his time with the Cubs. Overall, in his major league career he has gone 5-3 with a 4.80 ERA in 38 games.

--The Rangers have a nice article about future RedHawk Thomas Diamond and his father's day performance that earned him the MiLB award for best Class A Single Game Performance.

--Former RedHawks pitching coach Glenn Abbott and trainer Greg Harrel have been reunited with Grady Fuson as the pitching coach and trainer for San Diego's AA team the Mobile Baybears. Good to see them land on their feet after being jerked around by the Rangers. And speaking of which, Evan Grant is reporting that the Rangers have struck again and fired RedHawks pitching coach Lee Tunnell. This, like a lot of Rangers announcements, is probably on hold until Orel Hershiser decides where he will be coaching next year. STUPID move if it actually happens AND it will leave us looking for both a manager and a pitching coach.

--Former RedHawk Aaron Myette was one of three pitchers for Team Canada to throw a no-hitter against Guatemala yesterday. Go Aaron!!

--Personal Favorite Rick Short of the New Orleans Zephyrs was named the AAA Offensive Player of the year. It's a well deserved award for Rick who flirted with hitting .400 this season! Former RedHawk Marcus Thames was named the AAA Post-Season Performer of the year. For a complete breakdown of the awards given out by MiLB, click here.

More signings

--The Rangers have announced the signing of two left handed pitchers, Kevin Walker and Jesse Carlson. Both also received an invite to big league spring training. The 24 year old Carlson spent the 2005 season in the Toronto organization, putting up a 2.79 ERA in 61 relief appearances between AAA and AA ball. The 2002 June draft pick has spent time in the Tigers, Astros and Blue Jays organizations. Walker, an Irving, Texas native, was originally selected by San Diego in the sixth round of the 1995 draft out of Grand Prairie High School where he was a teammate of Kerry Wood. Walker spent the majority of the 2005 Season with the Charlotte Knights, putting up a 5.28 ERA in 46 IPs. Both should spend at least part of the year in the RedHawks pen.

--Newsday is reporting that the MFYs have expressed interest in former RedHawk Craig Monroe to fill their CF hole.

--A couple former RedHawks including Brian "the Anti-Red Sox" Esposito and Ramon Nivar have signed minor league contracts with the St. Louis Cardinals. Former Ranger farmhand Andy Cavazos also signed a deal with the Cardinals.

--In Venezuela, former RedHawk and personal favorite G. Tom Evans hit a 3-run homer in the first game of a doubleheader. Tom is tied for 2nd in the VWL in homeruns with 6 and is 3rd in RBIs (22). He's currently hitting .328 with 21 walks in 22 games. Rene Reyes, a once top prospect of the Colorado Rockies, is also playing well, hitting .276 with 7 doubles, 14 walks, and 14 RBIs in 25 games. Luke Scott (Astros) continued his torried pace, hitting 2 homers and driving in 4 runs. After four games, Luke has 3 homers and 6 RBIs.

Winter Leagues

--Ex-OSU star Luke Scott homered and tripled in his debut for Magallanes of the Venuezulan Winter League. After Chris Burke's hot playoffs, it is more likely that Luke may be traded this off-season. Interestingly, the Astros aquired Luke when they traded my buddy Jeriome Robertson to the Indians.

--Clint Barmes went 3-for-6 with a double in the Dominican Winter League.

--The New York Post is reporting that the Mets may be trying to get Adrian Gonzalez and Gerald Laird from the Rangers to trade them to the Devil Rays.

--Kathleen Sullivan of the FWST reports that the Rangers must set their roster for the Rule 5 draft by next week. 2-5 players are expected to be added with Ian Kinsler and Joaquin Arias being virtual locks. There is a good chance that Wes Littleton and Drew Meyer will be added on the strength of their AFL season.

--The Rangers have their final AFL Recap where the seasons of Wes and Drew, along with the rest of the Rangers contingent, are discussed.

--According to the Rockies website, my buddy Marv Foley has been promoted to roving catching instructor.

More moves and potential moves

--The Rangers signed two more players to minor league contracts. Rick Bauer is a RHP who was drafted by the Orioles in 1997 and has been with the organization since. He started last season with Baltimore, putting a 9.72 ERA in 5 relief appearances before being optioned to Ottawa. Bauer spent the rest of the season with the Lynx, going 3-8, with 4.00 ERA. He has spent time in the major leagues in each of the past five seasons, putting up a 4.58 ERA in 125 career games. Adrian Brown is an OF who has bounced around between teams. He was with the PawSox in 2002 and was a member of the AAA All-Star Team. He spent the past 2 seasons with the Omaha Royals, going .273 (151-553) with 17 doubles, 7 triples, 7 home runs, 51 RBI and 28 stolen bases in 2005. Both players received spring training invites but still figure to star the year with the RedHawks. Bauer will probably be in the pen and Brown should replace Jason Conti in CF.

--Former RedHawk Hank Blalock has created a scholarship program to assist Arlington High School Juniors. He will give $10,000 to the winner of an essay contest to help with college expenses. Good for Hank!

--Gerald Laird may be the first RedHawk traded. The San Diego Padres, whose assistant GM is Grady Fuson, reportedly has interest in trading for Gerald in exchange for Adam Eaton. Not surprising since Grady has already traded for Gerald once and the Padres need to fill a catching void. Most likely fellow California native Adrian Gonzalez or Laynce Nix would also be included in the package.

--Ex-RedHawk Kevin Mench is also generating a lot of interest. Reportedly the Royals have offered Jeremy Affeldt and the Indians, Pirates and Blue Jays are also showing interest.

This same article notes that Mike Young is likely to play for Team USA in next springs' World Baseball Classic.

--Ex-Redhawk Matt Perisho (LHP) signed a minor league contract with the Mets and was invited to spring training.

--The Rangers and Indians have had some discussions about RedHawk Adrian Gonzalez. Adrian, who is one of the Rangers best trade chips, is pretty sure to be moved this off-season.

--It looks like one of my favorite PCL third baseman will be leaving the Astros organization and signing with the Royals. Look for Mike Coolbaugh to spend at least part of the season with Omaha.

Winter Play

--Ex-RedHawk Jeremi Gonzalez had a rough time in his first start in the VWL, giving six runs in 2 1/3 innings.

--Ex-RedHawk Erick Burke has signed a minor league deal with the Padres. This follows the signing of Ryan Snare in August. Like Doug Melvin in Milwaukee, it looks like Grady Fuson may be stock piling players he is familiar with from his days with the Rangers.

--RedHawk Esteban German continues to burn up the DWL. He is currently 1st in runs scored (11) and stolen bases (8) and his .404 average ranks 2nd in the league.

--Rangers did another weekly wrap-up of their prospects in the AFL. Good to see my buddies Drew Meyer and Wes Littleton finally getting the props they deserve!

--The RoughRiders have done an excellent series of articles with some of the Redhawks players, including Drew Meyer, Jason Hart, and Steve Rowe.

--BA has come out with their All-Rookie team for 2005. Garrett Atkins (Rockies) was named 1st Team 3B, Clint Barmes (Rockies) was named 2nd Team SS and ex-RedHawk Chris Young was named 1st Team Starting Pitcher.

Free Agents and Trades

--Bunch of free agent picks by the Rangers. They have signed C/3B Jamie Burke who was with the White Sox, OF Adam Hyzdu (the King of babble! :-)), RHP Chris Baker and RHP Shane Bazzell to minor league contracts. Bazzell pitched in Frisco last year and is expected to return there. Look for the other 3 to spend at least part of the year in AAA.

--Adrian Gonzalez continues to increase his trade value. In Wednesday's game he doubled three times and drove in two runs in the Mexican Pacific League. Adrian's numbers are up to .342/.405/.553 in 76 at-bats. He's fourth in the league in average and tied for first with seven doubles. With Mark Teixeira firmly entrenched at 1B and Adrian's lack of speed and glove, he really needs to be traded this off-season. If he keeps hitting like this, he could bring a handsome reward.

--Great Article on MiLB.com where minor league free agent Todd Donovan talks about the best 6-yrs on the market that he has played with or against. Donovan also talks about what he is looking for in picking his new team.

--In this week's mailbag, Thomas Harding answers questions regarding two of my favorite 3B, Jeff Baker and Garrett Atkins.

Winter Ball

--Former RedHawk and personal favorite, Colby Lewis returned to game action. Colby had been in Lakeland since Spring Training dealing with continued shoulder problems, which began with rotator cuff surgery in April 2004 and required follow-up work this summer after he was on the verge of pitching in games again. According to a Tigers pitching coach, Colby has returned in health, making a handful of relief appearances in the Instructional League, including back-to-back innings. If he remains healthy, he could pitch in games next Spring Training.

--RHP Brian Sweeney has signed a minor league contract with San Diego and was invited to spring training.

--Former RedHawk Dave Elder resigned a minor league deal with Kansas City.

--Keith Ginter accepted his assignment to Triple-A Sacramento. Not surprising since he would have forfeited his $1 million salary (based on the 3-year deal he signed with Milwaukee) if he chose free agency. I still expect him to be traded by spring training.

--Randy Flores had surgery to remove a bone spur from his throwi
